Reciprocating vs. Chain Grate: Performance Advantages Shown in the Data

In the boiler combustion-equipment market, the reciprocating grate and the chain grate are the two mainstream products. Through long-term practice and accumulated data, our partner factory has clearly demonstrated the performance advantages of the reciprocating grate across several key indicators, making it the preferred choice for many customers.

In terms of fuel adaptability, the reciprocating grate has a clear edge. The data show that our partner factory’s reciprocating grate can burn low-grade coal with moisture ≤40% and ash ≤30% efficiently, while a chain grate’s combustion efficiency on such fuel typically drops by 15%–20%. This comes down to the automatic fire-stirring function of the reciprocating grate: the reciprocating motion of the moving grate keeps the coal bed continually tumbling and loosening, preventing caking and “burn-through” holes. A chain grate, by contrast, needs manual fire stirring, which not only adds labor but also lowers boiler efficiency because the furnace door has to be opened.

In economy and energy consumption, the reciprocating grate performs equally well. Our partner factory’s reciprocating grate uses 20%–30% less metal than a chain grate, consumes 15%–25% less electricity, and is more economical in both manufacturing and running costs. Taking a grate matched to a 10 t/h boiler as an example, our partner factory’s reciprocating grate saves roughly ¥12,000 a year in electricity and cuts fuel costs by 8%–12% thanks to complete combustion. Moreover, the reciprocating grate’s simple structure keeps maintenance costs more than 30% lower than a chain grate, making it even more economical over the long term. Recognizing that the reciprocating grate is stricter about coal particle size, our partner factory also offers fuel pre-treatment recommendations to further improve the user experience.
