The cross-beam chain grate is a mechanized, compact, and technologically advanced stoker-fired grate. It suits boilers with an evaporation capacity of 20–40 t/h and even larger. Its main structural difference from the chain belt grate is the use of many rigid cross beams. The grate bars are mounted in matching grooves on the beams, and the beams are fixed to the drive chains. There are generally two drive chains (more can be fitted when the grate is very wide), driven by sprockets on the front (drive) shaft. Cross-beam grates are widely used in large boilers and in specialized equipment for heating and drying. They are well suited to bituminous coal, lignite, and peat; with special design they can also be used to burn other fuels such as bagasse and various kinds of waste.
